Gardenhouse | Prouts Neck, Maine

Located across an unpaved lane from the entrance to the main residence, the Gardenhouse inhabits a spot in the wooded center of an ocean peninsula. In marked contrast to the dynamic ocean panorama one encounters from the main house, the Gardenhouse offers quiet moments of beauty and retreat. In the few months of Maine summer, a garden is a treasure.

The Gardenhouse sits on top of a bluestone terrace. The front loggia provides a sheltered sitting space with the cutting beds established between the loggia and a low stone wall, which follows the lane. At night the glass panel doors and the skylight at the roof’s ridge glow like a lantern to mark the entrance to the main residence.
